Iceland has been gaining popularity as a travel destination over recent years. The more pictures I saw the higher it moved up on my list of places to see. When the chance to visit came, I grabbed at it with both hands! I was so excited about this trip, and the natural beauty I would get to see and photograph. Iceland ranks second out of all the countries that I have visited for natural beauty, Scotland ranks number one for me. One thing Iceland is well known for, is their beautiful waterfalls. On this trip we visited Reykjavik and the southern coast of Iceland. The following four waterfalls are must see places if your visiting the southern coast of Iceland.
1. Skagofoss Waterfall
Skagofoss is located on the southern coast of Iceland, near Vik’s Beach. It is one of the most popular waterfalls to see along this route, and it’s not hard to see why. It measures 25 meters (82 feet) high and 60 meters (196 feet) wide. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland, and definitely the most beautiful we saw. F.Y.I for any photographers out there . . . if you go on a sunny day, Skagofoss is known to produce a single rainbow, and sometimes even a double rainbow! There is also a path on the side of the waterfall to hike to the top of the waterfall, for those who want to see the views above the waterfall.
2. Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
Seljalandsfoss is another popular waterfall located on the southern coast of Iceland. It is well known for the fact that, it’s the only waterfall in Iceland you can walk behind it! This provides a unique angle for any photographs you may want to take. Seljalandsfoss is a very distinctive waterfall with a thin cascade of water that drops 63 meters (206 feet). Please be careful walking the path behind the waterfall . . . it can be quite slippery, especially walking over the rocks. Also a fair warning . . . you will get wet if you walk behind it (just part of the fun, right) . . . have your waterproof jacket with you! We enjoyed a wonderful, reviving cup of hot chocolate from the food shop here.
3. Gljufrabui Waterfall
Gljufrabui is located on the southern coast of Iceland, in fact, it’s a short walk from Seljalandfoss. It was a lovely surprise for us, as we had not heard of this waterfall. It’s slightly hidden away from view, making it even more magical. Once you finish your walk behind Seljalandsfoss take the path to the right, and follow it all the way down. This waterfall measures 40 meters high (131 feet) and is hidden behind a large cliff. In order to see this waterfall you need walk through the crevice, where the wading stream is flowing from. We balanced ourselves on the rocks, so we would not get wet, but there is the potential your feet will get wet, so make sure you have correct footwear for this. I was wearing my waterproof boots, so I wasn’t too concerned about getting my feet wet.
4. Urridafoss Waterfall
Urridafoss (the waterfall of Salmon) is located on the Þjórsá River on the southern coast of Iceland. It is the most voluminous waterfall in Iceland, and flows into the Þjórsárhraun lava field. This waterfall is generally overlooked by tourist, but it’s really quite beautiful, and deserving of a spot on your to do list. It is located right off of highway 1.

I doubted about visiting Iceland last year. But eventually chose Poland. That was wonderful. But Iceland is still high on my travel list. I always love seeing waterfalls. And this really looks incredible! Love your photos.

These are breathtaking waterfalls, Amber! Iceland never ceases to surprise me!
I just went and loved it. Unfortunately I was not able to see the northern lights while I was there (cloudy skies and low solar action), :(. There is another waterfall called Sheep’s Waterfall on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula that you can also walk behind via a sheep path.
